|
SRF seeks to balance society's need to provide ecological
protection and maintain stable environmental conditions. The company not only
insists on maintaining the existing natural environment but also actively
promotes and invests in engineering solutions that support human well-being and
are compatible with sustaining natural environmental systems. The company
recognises its responsibility to minimise the impact on the environment by
reducing waste and emissions from its operations. Reducing carbon footprints,
energy conservation, water conservation, replenishment of groundwater and
resource conservation are some of the areas where the company has been working
proactively to minimise waste and optimise the usage of natural resource.

Wind Mills
|
|
SRF set up nine units of 14 MW Wind Mill in Tamil Nadu in 2008
to meet the partial energy requirements for its units based in Southern India.
This amount of power produced from wind energy, a carbon free resource has
resulted in GHG emission reduction equal to the carbon content in the power
substituted from the electricity grid. The project, which has been implemented
as a major source of renewable energy, is part of the company's Clean
Development Mechanism (CDM) initiative. The generated power from the wind
turbines will be wheeled by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) grid network.
With this project, SRF shall prevent emissions of about 35,000 metric tonnes of
CO2 entering the atmosphere annually from power generation. The climate impact
correlates to planting 150,000 trees or removing 30,000 cars from the road.

Biomass Project
|
|
SRF has also installed a boiler using biomass (mustard husk) to
produce steam for captive use in its chemicals plant in Bhiwadi. This has not
only saved on fossil fuel consulption but also provided a cleaner environment
by consuming agriculture waste (mustard husk) in an eco-friendly manner. The
use of husk has saved coal, thereby reducing carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide
generation from coal. Husk is procured from the surrounding villages, within a
radius of 50 kilometres.

Water Management
|
|
SRF for its chemicals plant at Bhiwadi has undertaken several
water harvesting & replenishment initiatives in and around the plant. The
company uses all the treated effluent (plant & domestic) inside the
premises for the purpose of horticulture. In fact, the plant has earmarked 35
per cent of plant area for developing green belt by using recycled and treated
water. More importantly, the chemical plant in Bhiwadi does not discharge any
water outside the factory premises, thus earning a unique distinction of being
a 'zero discharge complex'. Besides, as a part of Clean Development Mechanism,
the company has been investing in construction of water harvesting structures
like earthen check dams to harvest rain water in and around its chemical plant
in Bhiwadi in Rajastahan since 2006-07. These initiatives have led to a
significant rise in water table in the catchment area which is largely a barren
and undulated land where cultivation was earlier not possible.

Solid Waste Management
|
|
SRF remains committed to ensure safe disposal of waste generated
in the plant. The company especially for its chemical plant in Bhiwadi has
installed several facilities for waste management of hazardous and
non-hazardous waste.

CDM Project
|
|
SRF has been one of the pioneers in the country to invest in
Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) for cutting carbon emissions. SRF got its CDM
project registered with the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change) under Kyoto Protocol in December 2005. The company thus began
incinerating R-23, a by-product of one of the refrigerant gases R-22 (HCFC),
which is produced by SRF at its Chemical Plant at Bhiwadi. Earlier, like all
other producers of HCFC 22 in the developing world, R-23, which has a global
warming potential equal to 11,700 times that of CO2was being vented into the
atmosphere. SRF's CDM project has the potential to mitigate 3.83 million metric
tonnes CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas emissions annually. The revenues generated
from the transfer of CERs (carbon emission reductions) have been used by SRF to
augment its efforts in the area of Sustainable Development besides investing in
core businesses.
